The Challenge

A client approached me with a need to track and monitor company layoffs across the United States. While WARN notices are publicly available, the data is scattered across different state websites and formats, making it difficult to get a comprehensive view of the employment landscape.

The Solution

I developed layoff.watch, a centralized database system that automatically collects and standardizes WARN notices from multiple state sources. The platform provides an easy-to-use interface for searching and filtering layoff data across different industries and locations.

Technical Implementation

The system consists of several key components:

  • Custom web scrapers for each state's database
  • A robust data pipeline for processing and standardizing information
  • An automated daily update system
  • A responsive web interface for searching and viewing the data
  • Data visualization tools for identifying trends

Results

The final product delivered a streamlined way to monitor workforce changes across the United States. Users could easily search through WARN notices, filter by various parameters, and stay informed about industry trends. The automated nature of the system meant minimal maintenance was required while ensuring data remained current and accurate.
